New Delhi : Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Arjun Singh Friday said it was imperative that human rights awareness is imbibed in the younger generation.
"It is important that the seeds of sensitivity are sown at an early stage which would go a long way in ensuring civilized society," he said at a function to release recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) aimed at creating rights-sensitivity in Gen Next.
The NHRC recommended human rights education as a main subject at all levels from primary to post-graduate.
The recommendations were on Human Rights Model Curriculum for Universities and Module for Teachers Training in School Education.
Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC), S.K. Thorat said the commission would ensure that the recommendations are implemented and emphasised that merely making the children aware of the rights was not sufficient.
"Human rights education should be in such a manner that it empowers the students to take position and action every time there is a violation of rights," Thorat said.
NHRC Chairman Rajendra Babu said in the backdrop of growing violence, human rights education cannot be reduced to "a signage introduction".
"It brings about a profound reform of education which touches upon curricula in-service and pre-service training, textbooks, methodology and the organisation of the education system at all levels," Babu said.
Last year, NHRC had constituted a Task Force on Human Rights Education consisting of eminent academicians and legal experts in the field from across the country.
