West Bengal bus operators withdraw strike call

By IANS,

Kolkata : The bus owners associations of West Bengal Tuesday decided to withdraw their call for a strike Thursday after Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty assured them the fare rates would be revised.

“Chakraborty has assured us to revise the bus fare rates. The fare for the first four km remains Rs.4. But for the 5-12 km slab, the rates have been increased to Rs.6. Since our demand has been met, we have withdrawn the proposed July 10 bus strike,” Bengal Bus Syndicate spokesperson Swarnakamal Saha told reporters.

Officials said the revised rates would come into effect from July 15.

The associations Monday announced they would go on a strike to protest the rate of increase in bus fares.

Chakraborty had announced in June that bus fares would be increased by a maximum of Re.1 from July to keep up with the increased fuel prices.
