Chennai : Political leaders in Tamil Nadu Sunday condoled the death of former prime minister Chandra Shekhar, saying it was a "mammoth loss to the nation".
Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said Chandra Shekhar was a great parliamentarian and an able administrator. "He was known for his flawless oratory, simplicity and courage and stood for his ideals and principles. His death is an irreparable loss to the nation."
Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi said the former prime minister's death was a "mammoth loss to the nation". He was steadfast in observing the principle of secularism, the chief minister added.
AIADMK leader J. Jayalalitha said Chandra Shekhar had a distinguished political career and had made a distinct mark as a parliamentarian. He was "outspoken in his views and firm in his commitment to principles".
"He was not a person to mince words and was a nationalist to the core. His demise is an irreparable loss to our country," she said.
