Haiti Food Security Support Approved

Madrid : More than 50 countries and international organizations approved an urgent food security support program Tuesday to reinforce food security and rural development in Haiti.

The assistance scheme was decided by the Food Security Conference for Haiti, co-presided by Argentina and France and fostered by the Spanish International Agency for Development Cooperation.

Donors want to respond to the needs of the Haitian population in a short, medium or long term, with measures permitting to ensure food support.

Other objectives are reinforcing nutrition and rapid reactivation of agricultural production, by means of investments promoting structural and sustainable changes, according to a document with the conclusions of the event.

The forum agreed the celebration of a high level meeting to put the program in force.

The forum also warned on the seriousness of the problems affecting Haiti, particularly the consequences of the increase of the prices of food.

The Haitian delegation to the meeting was headed by Secretary of State Fritz Longchamp.

The joint presidency was in charge of Julia Levi, general director of the International Cooperation Department of the Argentinean Foreign Affairs Ministry, and French Jerome Pasquier, assistant general director for International Cooperation and Developent.
