Tokyo : A magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit northern and central Japan Saturday morning , the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to houses, and a tsunami alert was lifted in the afternoon, according to the government.
Some train service was suspended, but no damage was reported at nuclear power plants in north-central Fukushima province.
The epicentre was about 10 km under the sea basin off the coast of north-central Fukushima province.
A 20-centimetre tsunami wave was reported earier on the coast of Miyagi and Fukushima provinces. The agency lifted the tsunami warning in the afternoon.
Vacationers on the beach were warned to stay out of the water.
