Western Railways freight earnings up in first quarter

Ahmedabad : Western Railway’s freight earning has grown 17.8 percent to Rs.8.94 billion in the first quarter of 2008-09, compared to Rs.7.59 billion in the same period last year, a senior official said here Tuesday.

In a statement, Western Railway general manager A.K. Jhingron said freight loading too was up, increasing to 10.5 million tonnes from 9.6 million tonnes, showing a growth of 9.5 percent.

During this period, growth in traffic was seen in almost every commodity. Coal and fertilizer loading stood at 1.2 million tonnes and 2.5 million tonnes, as against 900,000 tonnes and 2.1 million tonnes last year, reflecting a growth of 46 percent and 18 percent, respectively.

Petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) loading also saw a growth of 11 percent over the same period last year.
