Thiruvananthapuram : Tomin J. Thachankary, Kerala's inspector general of police, was suspended from service Tuesday for corruption.
His suspension came after a police complaint that he had amassed Rs.9.5 million wealth between Jan 1, 2003, to March 31, 2005, when he was managing director of the state-owned Books and Publication Society.
Thachankary is a close aide of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and was closely associated with the setting up of the party-backed Kairali TV channel in the late 90s, which was the brainchild of Vijayan.
The order for his suspension was cleared by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan Tuesday afternoon after vigilance director Upendra Verma submitted a report to the home secretary recommending that the tainted officer be kept away from service in the wake of the First Information Report being filed at the Trissur Vigilance Court last week.
A division bench of the Kerala High Court Monday declined his prayer to direct the home secretary to give him a hearing in the matter.
Thachankary's mother has written to the CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat claiming that her son was being victimised by Achuthanandan.
