Hasina refused permission to visit newborn grandson in US

Dhaka : A grandson has just been added to Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's family, but she is not allowed to visit him in the US, despite fervent pleas to the government by her last week.

The birth of Khandakar Jarif Mujib Hossain to Hasina's daughter Saima Hossain Putul and son-in-law Khandakar Mashrur Hossian Mitu was announced in Dhaka Wednesday, Star Online said.

The child was born in Florida, where the Khandakars have been living, Hasina announced through a press release.

The government that has slapped a murder charge and three extortion cases against Hasina disallowed her from leaving for the US in a last minute-decision that involved a court directive.

It did not entertain Hasina's emotion-charged pleas that she was suffering as a mother because of "politically motivated" charges against her.

Media reports have said that both Hasina and another former prime minister Khaleda Zia have been virtually under house arrest with their movements and visitors restricted.

Hasina has said there are three layers of security around her house.

But M A Matin, an advisor in the caretaker government, denied the charges Wednesday, saying neither of the two leaders was under house arrest.

They were also "no threats to their security," he said in response to questions on whether their movements were restricted because they were security threats.
