One more municipality chief faces recall in Chhattisgarh

By IANS,

Raipur : Chhattisgarh Election Commission has set a date late next month for voters to decide a municipality chief’s fate in a recall vote. Earlier in mid-June, three municipal body chiefs in the state who had not been living up to voters’ expectations were forced to step down, recalled by voters.

“Voters of the Kusmi Nagar panchayat will have only two symbols on their ballot papers Aug 26 – an empty chair and an occupied one – to decide whether the elected president should be recalled or not,” Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Trivedi told IANS Wednesday.

The chief of the panchayat, in the state’s northern Surguja district, has to bag more than 50 percent of the votes to continue in his post.

Voters recalled presidents of Gundardehi and Nawagarh nagar panchayats in Durg district and Rajpur in Surguja district last month when the majority polled against them.

“The fresh elections for Gundardehi, Nawagarh and Rajpur Nagar panchayats will be held Aug 26 along with recall voting for Kusmi and results to be declared Aug 28,” Trivedi added.

Political analysts say about 60-70 percent municipal chiefs in the state face accusations of being “careless towards development and infrastructure projects”.
