Governor to hold talks with Jammu protesters

By IANS,

Jammu : Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra will visit Jammu Thursday to hold talks with leaders of a group agitation against the state government’s decision to revoke land transfer to the Amarnath shrine management.

It will be for the first time that the governor will hold face-to-face talks with the agitators demanding the return of the 40 hectares of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.

The land was allotted to the board May 26 but withdrawn July 1 following protests in the Kashmir Valley.

Leela Karan Sharma, convenor of the Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti, confirmed that they had agreed to meet the governor.

“We will place our demands in writing and expect the governor to give us his reply in writing,” Sharma told reporters.

“Our talks will focus on the return of the land. The governor has absolute executive and legislative powers as the state is under the governor’s rule. He is also the chairman of the shrine board, so he has all powers to restore the land to the shrine board and end the matter,” he said.
