Tehran : Iran Monday said it has successfully test fired a new missile, state-run news agency IRNA reported.
The missile is capable of targeting an enemy vessel within a range of 300 km, the agency quoted Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) commander Brigadier General Mohammad-Ali Ja’fari as saying.
Ja’fari claimed the technology used to build the missile has not been tried by any other country.
The Islamic country during a large military exercise in the Persian Gulf has recently test fired a series of radar-evading missiles claimed to be able to reach US or Israel.
There is apprehension in the West that Iran’s missiles may be adaptable to nuclear warheads.
Iran’s existing ballistic rocket called Sahab III is said to be nuclear capable.
According to Andy Oppenheimer, a weapons expert with Jane’s Information Group, Iranian missiles may be multiple re-entry vehicles capable of attacking different targets.
The United States and its allies believe Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons and demand that Tehran stop its uranium enrichment activities.
Iran has persistently said that its nuclear programme is civilian but at the same time refused to stop enrichment activities.
