Lucknow : Aligarh Muslim University professor Hamid Ali has been nominated for the prestigious Sheikh Zayed Energy Future Prize (ZEFP) of the United Arab Emirates, varsity officials said Monday.
Ali, who teaches at the varsity’s department of petroleum studies, had joined AMU in 1980.
“Getting nominated for such a coveted award is really heartening,” an elated Ali told IANS.
“I am the first person from AMU who has been nominated for ZEFP,” he claimed.
Ali has been nominated for the award, which is supported by the government of Abu Dhabi, for his work in the field of energy conservation and environmental protection.
The ZEFP award was launched in January this year at the inaugural World Future Energy Summit. Nobel Laureate Rajendra Kumar Pachauri will be one of the jury members for giving the award.
The government of Abu Dhabi has established ZEFP with a prize fund of $2.2 million annually to honour individuals, companies, NGOs and organisations for their excellence in the innovation, development and implementation of sustainable energy solutions, officials said.
The winner of the Prize will receive $1.5 million and two additional finalists will each be awarded $350,000 to further develop their ideas.
Ali, who completed his PhD from AMU, also possesses an M.Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Rourkee.
Before joining AMU, Ali worked with the Indian Institute of Petroleum.
