Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) : A senior Meerut district police official was transferred while two of his juniors were suspended Tuesday following the murder of three members of a family, officials said.
Tension prevails in Mawana town in the district, about 550 km from state capital Lucknow, following the July 26 murders of Fazal Hasan, his wife and daughter. Hasan was employed in Saudi Arabia and had come to Mawana on a holiday.
They had gone to visit relatives in a nearby village. However, they were killed on the way by unidentified men. Hasan’s body bore more than 50 stab wounds, police sources said.
They said the murders could be linked to a July 25 incident in which a Hindu girl in Mawana alleged that a group of Muslim boys had molested her. After she complained, a group of men ransacked the houses of the accused.
Following the violence, Ajay Singh, senior superintendent of police, has been transferred while Durgesh Kumar, circle officer of Mawana, and Hari Prakash Kasana, police inspector of Mawana, have been suspended.
Director General of Uttar Pradesh Police Vikram Singh and home secretary Kunwar Fatah Bahadur Singh held a meeting on the law and order situation with district administration officials here Tuesday.
Vikram Singh told reporters that Moradabad Senior Superintendent of Police Prem Prakash had been appointed as the Meerut police chief.
