Equity markets flat in early trade

Mumbai : Indian equity markets, which opened lower Friday following weak markets abroad, were flat in early trade.

The 30 share benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Sensex, opened with a loss of 80.68 points at 15,036.57. Ten minutes into trading, it had climbed to 15,086.08, still 31.17 points or 0.21 percent below its closing figure Thursday.

At the same time the S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange was trading at 4,526.05 with a marginal gain of 2.20 points from its previous close.

The market breadth was positive. On BSE, 610 shares advanced, 432 declined and 26 remained unchanged.

Sterlite Industries, Tata Steel and ONGC were among the gainers while Tata Motors, HDFC Bank and Mahindra and Mahindra were among the losers in initial trade.

Other Asian markets were trading mixed.
