Kolkata : The keenly awaited Calcutta High Court judgement on cricket administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya’s legal challenge to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) charges did not come Friday.
Justice Indira Banerjee had fixed Friday for passing the orders in case after the hearing was completed last month. Since Justice Banerjee did not attend court, the judgement is now expected Monday.
The verdict would impact on the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) elections and its July 28 annual general meeting (AGM).
After being expelled from the BCCI and then forced to resign as CAB president on charges of “misappropriation of funds”, Dalmiya took the battle to court.
Some Dalmiya backers even said if the verdict went in favour of the former strongman of Indian cricket, the man himself could contest the CAB polls.
A close Dalmiya ally though said, “We are not thinking on those lines until the verdict comes. But yes, if the verdict is in our favour, everything is possible.”
Dalmiya may have been out of cricket administration since he was expelled from the BCCI two years ago, but even today he wields plenty of clout within the CAB.
If Dalmiya is cleared of the embezzlement charges and the BCCI ban lifted, incumbent CAB president and Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee will have a tough time retaining his post.
Come July 28, CAB’s 76th AGM at Eden Gardens will elect its president, two joint-secretaries and a treasurer.
The CAB’s 121-vote electorate comprises a vote each from the 94 Kolkata-based clubs, 18 districts, eight universities and the Office Sports Federation.
The nominations, already being filed, close on July 20.
