Floods kill 37 in Pakistan

Islamabad : At least 37 people have been killed in flooding caused by torrential rains over the past week in Pakistan’s Punjab province, state media reported Monday.

“The rain and flood related death toll swell to 37 in the 10 districts of Punjab province,” the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said.

So far, 3,472 houses have been destroyed, standing crops on 62,013 acres of land have been affected, and 90,752 people have been displaced, said Mian Muhammad Akram, director of Relief and Crisis Management department.

Relief camps have been set up to help the affected.

The intense monsoon rains pounded Pakistan in late July and early August, causing deadly floods.

The floods also affected the northwestern part of Pakistan, where dozens of people are believed to have died.
