New Delhi : After a fortnight of little rain, north India is witnessing showers again with the met office predicting a cool and wet weekend for the entire region.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), most north Indian cities including Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla, Jaipur, Lucknow and Srinagar have received light to moderate rainfall since Friday morning.
“The entire north India will see a wet weather Sunday. The monsoon is turning active and most of the states will experience cloudy skies and rain with thundershowers,” said an IMD official.
Early Saturday, the national capital experienced light rain bringing the mercury down to 25 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal.
Between Friday morning and Saturday morning (8.30 a.m.), the capital recorded 14 mm of rain, as the maximum temperature fell to 34 degrees Friday, five degrees below the maximum recorded Thursday.
“The national capital will see generally cloudy sky with a few spells of rain and thundershowers. One or two spells of heavy showers may be experienced in some areas,” the official said.
On June 28, IMD had announced the arrival of monsoon in Delhi but there was not much rain till Friday.
Meanwhile, IMD predicted fairly widespread rainfall activity over the western Himalayan region, northern plains, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, West Bengal and Sikkim from Saturday to Monday. Subsequently, rainfall over Madhya Pradesh is likely to increase.
“Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfalls are likely over Konkan and Goa, Orissa, Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during next 48 hrs (till Monday afternoon),” the IMD official said.
