Kolkata : Live crude bombs and firearms were recovered by police from near the restive Nandigram area of West Bengal’s East Midnapore district Wednesday.
“Acting on a tip off we recovered 23 live crude bombs, two pipeguns and six round of bullets from the bushes near Talpattikhal – a rivulet flowing between Khejuri and Nandigram – Wednesday. No arrests have been made so far. We are trying to find out who the arms belong to,” said District Police Superintendent Satyashankar Panda.
“We will regularly raid Nandigram and Khejuri for arms now onwards. But the rate of violence is so high here that it is impossible to restore complete peace in Nandigram,” he added.
Firearms and crude bombs were recovered in May and November last year from the same area.
At least 40 people have been killed in the Nandigram region since January 2007 when the region erupted in protest over proposed land acquisition for a special economic zone (SEZ) in collaboration with Indonesia’s Salim group for developing a chemical hub. Since then, a turf battle between the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the anti-land acquisition group Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) has broken out repeatedly in the violence-hit region.
