Ahmedabad : Eight people were killed and at least 6,000 people from low-lying areas were being moved to safer places in south and central Gujarat as heavy downpour continued in many parts of the state Wednesday.
Ahmedabad experienced heavy rainfall resulting in water logging in many parts while life was badly hit in Vadodara, Surat, Navsari, Valsad and Bharuch districts.
Several other parts of the state were also experiencing uninterrupted rains for the 24 hours ending Wednesday evening.
Incessant rains over the past few days affected rail traffic on the busy Ahmedabad-Mumbai route.
A low pressure formed over the Bay of Bengal had intensified resulting in a depression that led to the heavy rains, weather officials said, adding that parts of the state would receive more rain in coming days.
They forecast heavy rainfall with winds and thunderstorms across South Gujarat and Ahmedabad.
A high alert was sounded at 24 dams.
The water level at the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada river rose to over 119 metres – two metres short of the dam’s present height.
Hundreds of people from low-lying areas of Valsad, Navsari and Vadodara districts were being evacuated to safer places.
According to flood control authorities, 33 centres in Gujarat reported five to 13 inches of rain in the 24 hours to Wednesday evening.
