Local search and rescue teams said among the dead were four women and four children whose bodies were dragged out of the mud.

The toll was expected to rise as several people were apparently trapped waiting to be rescued, said Abdul Hamid of the fire brigade in the southern port city of Chittagong.

The first landslide buried a shantytown in the port city, some 260 km south of Dhaka, killing 11 people, while many were missing.

Three more deaths were reported from the beach resort of Cox’s Bazaar.
