Cuba presents NAM stance on disarmament

By Prensa Latins, Vienna : Cuba, as president of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), has insisted on the need to comply with the treaties on nuclear disarmament and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Addressing the opening session of the preparatory committee for the conference to review the Non Proliferation Treaty in 2010 Monday, Cuban Ambassador Norma Goicochea underlined that multilateralism, according to the UN charter, is the only sustainable method to deal with multiple approaches to international disarmament and security.

She also recalled NAM’s commitment to the agreement.

The Cuban ambassador said NAM would present the working documents on eight specific issues to be considered by the preparatory committee.

“The documents fully reflect our stances and viewpoints on several matters related to the functioning and operation of the Treaty and on compliance with the agreements and results from the review and extension conferences,” she added.

She called upon all states, having nuclear weapons or not, to recognise the importance of fully and non-selectively complying with the treaty, signed 39 years ago.
