Engineering students of AMU get Satyendra Kumar Kashyap Merit Scholarship

Aligarh: Mr. Zishan Akhtar (Final Year B.Tech. Mechanical), Mr. Muhammad Muaz (Third Year B.Tech. Mechanical) and Mr. Mohammad Owais (Second Year B.Tech) – all three students of Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University have received the Satyendra Kumar Kashyap Merit Scholarship for the year 2011 at a function organized here at Aligarh.

The Satyendra Kumar Kashyap Merit Scholarship is given by the Aligarh Education Endowment Fund (AEEF), USA in memory of Mr. Satyendra Kumar Kashyap, an AMU alumnus who obtained his B.E (Mechanical Engineering) degree from Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology way back in 1966. Mr. Kashyap retired as Superintending Engineer, UP State Vigilance in 2004 and passed away in June 2010 in Lucknow. Mr. Kashyap was a proud Aligarian and very passionate about his Alma Mater. The scholarship has been established by his daughter, Deepali Kashyap as a tribute to her father’s alma mater, Aligarh Muslim University.

At the award giving ceremony, Prof. S.M.A. Rizvi, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology presented the welcome address and expressed gratitude towards Ms. Kashyap. Prof. Rizvi highlighted the importance of such funding for the encouragement of students.

Prof. Ishtiyaq Zilli, Director Darul Musannefin Shibli Academy and a retired Professor from the Department of History, presiding over the function, highlighted the importance and significance of the AEEF and shed light on the significant achievements of the organization.

Prof. Ekram Husain, Principal, Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology also spoke on the occasion.

Mr. Afzal Usmani, Member of AEEF presented a report on the activities, achievements and the services rendered by the AEEF. He said that the Aligarh Education Endowment Fund is a charitable organization founded by AMU alumni and well wishers of the University to serve the educational needs of the underprivileged communities in India and works as a non-profit, secular, non-partisan, and non-political organization. AEEF is funding a broad variety of educational projects, ranging from school to post-graduate levels, including areas such as Information Technology, Biotechnology, Medicine, Engineering, Management and Business Administration, Mass Communication, Basic Sciences, Social Sciences, and Law with emphasis on areas, which will accelerate the flow of the young generation into the economic mainstream.

The scholarship program is supported by alumni of Aligarh Muslim University and its friends and private foundations. In the year 2010-11 AEEF distributed almost 12 lakh rupees across India. The main recipients were AMU students, students from Aligarh Modern School, Faiz-e-Aam Sciety Faizabad (UP), Fatehpur Girls Inter College, Mau (UP), Jamia Millia Islamia, IIT Delhi and Rahmani Foundation, Patna (Bihar). AEEF also sponsored 4 students for mentorship program under SSESA of Michigan USA.

Afzal Usmani also introduced the Board of advisors of AEEF in India which comprises, Prof. A.R. Kidwai former Governor of Haryana and Bihar, Mr. Ishrat Aziz, former Ambassador of Tunisia, Brazil and Saudi Arabia, Mr. Naved Masood, Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Dr. Obaid Siddiqi, Founder Director, TIFR Bangalore.

A committee of five members was formed to make deliberations on the award of Merit Scholarship and to make proposal for the next awardees. The committee consists of Prof. S.M.A. Rizvi, Prof. Arif Suhail, Dr. Omar Farooq, Ms. Deepali Kashyap and a representative from AEEF.
