Hyderabad: Communal clashes broke out on Tuesday in Tandur, a major municipal town and a hub of stone industry in the Rangareddy district, 125 kms from Hyderabad. Three civilians and on sub inspector are said to have been injured as members of the two communities pelted stones on each other. The incident has occurred due to alleged desecration of a Ganesh idol by some miscreants.
According to the sources, a Muslim marriage function was going on in MPT function hall, where a Ganesh idol was kept for shifting. Late in the night the guard of the function hall discovered that the idol was partially damaged. The rumor that the Ganesh idol was destroyed by minority community spread like a wildfire in the dead night hours of Monday. Hindu Utsava Kendra Samithi called for a Bandh on Tuesday which subsequently turned violent.
The activists of Hindu Utsava Kendra Samithi alleged that police have not acted fast to arrest the miscreants and decided to take law into their hands to get justice and revenge. HUKS activists staged a Rasta roko protest at Indra chowk. Then the mob started attacking minority business and properties, which led to clashes between two groups. The miscreants attacked an autorickshaw, a footwear shop, a pan shop and roadside fruit shops. A bus belonging to Karnataka was damaged, and rioters also attacked some lorries.
The situation was brought under control finally in the evening; sec 144 has been imposed in the whole Tandur town. Rangareddy rural SP Rajakumari and collector Vaniprasad are camping in the town to monitor the situation. DIG Nagireddy has warned the residents of Tandur that curfew will be imposed if riots are going to break out again.
Home minister Sabitha Indra reddy is expected to reach Tandur to examine the situation. Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen general secretary Ahmed Pasha Quadri has also reached Tandur.
