Punjab governor S.F. Rodrigues, who is also the administrator of Chandigarh, made a surprise visit to the building in Sector 19 here Saturday and asked officials to conserve the structure in its original form as it was of monumental importance to the city.

Corbusier and his team of architects and engineers had designed Chandigarh from this building in the 1950s and 60s.

Rodrigues also instructed officers to collect furniture, supporting material and other artefacts used by the Corbusier from different institutions and conserve them properly. He emphasised that the building and its surroundings should be restored to their original specifications.

The administrator also directed them to collect letters, files and other correspondence by Corbusier with different people and preserve them in a suitable environment.

He ordered that a survey be done of under-utilised government buildings and other vacant spaces in the city so that these areas could be properly used and maintained.
