The Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate court of Chandannagore in Hooghly district remanded him in judicial custody till Aug 18.

Debu Malik was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in June this year for his alleged role in the rape and murder of Tapasi Malik in Singur, about 40 km from the state capital.

Tapasi, a resident of Bajemelia in Singur was an active member of the Save Farmland Committee that was protesting land acquisition in the area for Tata Motors’ small car project.

Tapasi, who was on the forefront of the movement, was raped and murdered and her charred body was found inside the fenced-off area of Tata Motor’s project site on Dec 18 last year.

The CBI also arrested CPI-M Singur zonal committee secretary Suhrid Dutta in connection with the case.

Around 997 acres in Singur have been chosen by Tata Motors for its small car project. The issue had triggered a violent face-off between the West Bengal government and farmers led by civil society groups and parties like the Trinamool Congress.
