The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said they killed the four Special Task Force commandos of the police at Kanchkudichchiaru in the Ampara district on Wednesday, Doordarshan news website reported here today.

There was no immediate comment from the military.

However, the defence ministry said two security personnel were killed and five wounded in an LTTE attack on a post in Vavuniya in the northern part of the island on Wednesday evening.

The violence came as a top UN official, under secretary general John Holmes, was visiting the island.

He is due to end his four day visit later on Thursday following a meeting with President Mahinda Rajapakse.
