US oil worker kidnapped in Nigeria

Lagos : Unidentified militants kidnapped an American worker with an oil services firm at Port Harcourt, the capital city of Nigeria’s oil-rich Rivers State, according to local media reports reaching here Friday morning.

Felix Ogbaudu, the state commissioner of police, confirmed to the press that the man, a manager for Britain-based Hydrodive, was abducted on his way to office in the city.

According to the police, no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

Rivers State is within Nigeria’s Niger River Delta, one of the country’s most violent areas. Kidnapping, especially of foreign workers in the region, are frequent.

Since the start of 2007, some 100 foreigners have been held hostage in the oil Delta, and some have not been released till now.
