Tamil Nadu government to run cable TV

Chennai : In a path-breaking initiative, the Tamil Nadu government Saturday decided to get into the cable television distribution business.

The state cabinet decided to float a separate company, which will be a multi-system operator (MSO) in Chennai and a cable operator in other parts of the state.

For Chennai, the proposed company will be the third MSO, the other two being Sun Cable Vision, which is part of the Kalanidhi Maran-headed Sun Network, and Hathway Cable.

Preparatory work will be initiated soon for the project – the first in India in which a state government will own and run cable TV operations.

A state-run MSO has an advantage – it can use the municipal electric poles to string its wires without having to seek permission.

Consumers can also look forward to a lower monthly bill.

Meanwhile, cable operators associated with Hathway Cable held a meeting here to discuss the government announcement and its effects.
