Shimla was covered in a thin mantle of white after the early morning snowfall. It melted away by afternoon even as fresh snow began to fall by the evening.

Generally, Shimla gets its first snowfall in January. The minimum temperature in the hill resort was recorded at 3 degrees Celsius Monday.

Snowfall was also reported from the nearby tourist resorts of Kufri and Narkanda on the Indo-Tibetan national highway.

Over 15 cm snow was recorded at Narkanda, 64 km from here, blocking highway traffic. Traffic was also blocked at Kharapather, 78 km from here due to snow.

It has been also snowing in the sprawling tribal belt of Lahaul & Spiti and Kinnaur.
