Tehran, Moscow to further military cooperation

Tehran : Iranian Minister of Defence Mostafa Mohammad Najjar and visiting chairman of the Russian Federation on Military Cooperation Mikhail Dmitriev stressed here Wednesday the necessity of developing bilateral military cooperation.

The Iranian Ministry of Defence said in a release that the minister told the Russian military official that technical and defensive cooperation between Tehran and Moscow was part of efforts to maintain security and stability in the region.

He added that Tehran and Moscow had common strategic interests, hailing a recent visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Iran as a turning point in relations between both countries, the ministry said.

For his part, Dmitriev said he was happy to visit Tehran, emphasizing that both Russia and Iran should step up their consultations and communications with a view to consolidating bilateral ties in all fields.

The Russian military official and his party arrived here earlier Wednesday for the fourth meeting of the joint defensive committee.
