The largest Eid congregations were at the Hazratbal shrine and Jamia mosque in the state’s summer capital Srinagar.

Reports said there were large prayer gatherings also at Baramulla, Anantnag, Badgam, Pulwama and Kupwara towns.

S.M. Sahai, inspector general of police (Kashmir zone), said: “Eid prayers throughout the valley passed off peacefully.”

Thousands of children, undeterred by the winter chill, came out on the streets to burst firecrackers.

Kashmiris have surpassed all their previous records of Eid spending this year.

An official of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank Limited said: “Rs.280 million were withdrawn from the bank’s ATMs across the valley in the last two days.”

According to the results of a survey published in local media, Rs.80 million were spent on the buying of sacrificial goats alone. In Srinagar alone, people purchased bakery items worth over Rs.30 million in the last three days.
