Ahmedabad : Exit polls and opinion surveys again proved off the mark in Gujarat as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a landslide win despite predictions of a wafer-thin majority.
According to a survey carried out by the private news channel CNN-IBN in association with the Centre for Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), the BJP was tipped to win 92-100 seats to the Congress’ 77-85.
It had carried out its survey after the second round of voting Dec 23 with a sample size of 9,000-odd voters.
The NDTV 24×7 channel had given the ruling party 90-110 seats compared to 70-95 for the Congress. It had spoken to more than 18,000 respondents at the end of both first and second phases.
The STAR channel had given 103 seats for the BJP, 76 for the Congress and the rest to the others.
However, the BJP tally touched around 120 seats, just marginally less than what it won in 2002. The Congress, on the other hand, could manage only over 60 seats.
