According to police the holed up militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen militant group entered the mosque in Palnu, Yaripora village in Kulgam, 80 km from here, Sunday afternoon.

This followed a brief gunfight between the security forces and the militants in which one trooper of the Rashtriya Rifles sustained an injury, a senior police officer said here.

“Security forces had surrounded the village following information about the presence of militants there,” the officer said. The standoff continues.

Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of the area and other officials had reached the spot and were busy persuading the holed up guerrillas to lay down their arms and surrender, according to reports.
