Chandigarh : Indian border forces were put on alert along the 553-km-long fenced international border with Pakistan in Punjab Thursday evening following the assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto and reports of violence breaking out in some cities in that country.
The Border Security Force (BSF) special director general of police (DGP) G.S. Gill said that border security formations of the force had been put on alert following the latest disturbance in Pakistan.
“We alert our frontline formations whenever there is a major disturbance in the neighbouring country,” Gill said.
The alert would mean more security personnel being stationed round-the-clock at the fenced border. Shoot at sight orders remain in force at the border at all times.
However, there was no immediate reaction from the authorities regarding the plying of the friendship buses and the Samjhauta express peace train between the two countries.
Instructions for the buses and the train are issued by the central government.
“We have no instructions from Delhi regarding the buses,” Gill said.
Bhutto was assassinated during an election rally at Rawalpindi Thursday evening.
