UAE ahead in women’s parliamentary participation

Abu Dhabi : United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said in its report on human resources in 2007- 2008 that the UAE is ahead of USA, the UK, France, Canada, Greece, the Republic of Ireland, Japan and Poland in regard to women representation in the parliament.

The report, which was released early this month, showed the UAE tops the Arab countries in the women parliamentary representation. Women in the UAE’s Federal National Council (FNC) represent 22.5 per cent of total number of members of parliament.

It said that women are better represented in the parliaments of Seychelles’ Islands, Singapore, Cost Rica, Cuba, Argentine, Mexico, Belarus, Lithuania, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland and other countries in Europe compared to the UAE.
