New Delhi : The government Monday denied that it was considering a proposal to raise the retirement age of employees from 60 to 62 years.

In a statement, the government scotched rumours that the department of personnel and training was planning to finalise a proposal to raise the retirement age of officials that would benefit over 10 million central and state government employees.

“In order to put at rest all such speculations, it is clarified that there is no such proposal before the government,” said a statement issued by the ministry of personnel, public grievances and pensions.

In 1998, the retirement age was raised from 58 years to 60, principally as a means of easing pension payments caused by a hefty increase in government employees’ salaries on the lines of the Fifth Pay Commission recommendations.
