Shimla : The Shimla Municipal Corporation is planning to install long pipe like tin chutes in the hill station to dispose of garbage directly into drains, officials said Tuesday.
Door to door garbage collection is difficult in certain residential colonies here due to the hilly terrain. With the help of garbage chutes, waste disposal will become easier and faster. The waste material will slide down the pipes to be loaded into trucks by civic authorities.
"The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission will fund the installation work and tenders from parties willing to install the garbage chutes will be invited soon," said Narendra Kataria, the mayor of Shimla.
The capital of Himachal Pradesh has a population of about 250,000 and being a popular tourist destination it has hundreds of hotels, restaurants and guesthouses that generate large amounts of garbage.
