Vice presidential election Aug 10

New Delhi : Election to the vice president's post will be held on Aug 10, the Election Commission announced Thursday.

Notification for the vice presidential election will be issued Monday. The last date of nomination is July 23 and the scrutiny of nomination papers will take place the next day. The last day for withdrawal of candidates is July 26. Polling will take place if necessary.

According to the poll panel, the counting of votes will take place on the day of polling.

The term of Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat ends on Aug 18. He is contesting the July 19 presidential election as an independent backed by the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

An electoral college of MPs from both houses elect the vice president by secret ballot. The total number of voters in this election will be 790.

Both the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and NDA have not finalised their candidates for the post yet. The vice president also presides over the Rajya Sabha.
