Kolkata : Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee late Sunday met communist patriarch and former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu, who turned 94, and wished him good health.
"I came to wish him good health on his 94th birthday. He is a very senior leader in Indian politics and I came here out of a sense of social custom. It has nothing to do with political discussions," Banerjee told reporters after meeting Basu at his Salt Lake Indira Bhavan residence.
Banerjee and her party leader Sobhon Deb Chattopadhyay came to wish the grand old man of Indian politics immediately after returning from Delhi.
She had gone to Delhi along with people from Nandigram and Singur, where farmers are agitating against land acquisition for industrial project, to meet the president and prime minister on the issue.
Basu's birthday was celebrated at his residence by Pather Panchali, a cultural organisation run by West Bengal Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty's wife Romola Chakraborty.
Film actors, sportspersons and celebrities besides politicians were among those who visited the veteran Communist leader earlier in the day and wished him.
