New Delhi : With an eye on the Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Wednesday announced making swimming mandatory in government schools.
"Swimming would be made compulsory for all students of government schools keeping in view the ensuing Games," Dikshit said.
Dikshit announced this while addressing the third annual conference of heads of schools.
"We are committed to provide better sports facilities and infrastructure to enable students to make themselves competent to face challenge of medals in the mega sports competition," she added.
Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, who attended the conference, welcomed the chief minister's announcement.
However, neither Dikshit nor Lovely said anything about the availability of swimming pools in the schools.
