Singapore : Any individual, business or organisation based in Asia will be able to apply for a website address in the “.asia” domain starting Tuesday, organisers said.
The domain, “.asia” will begin in February, almost 18 months after the “.eu” domain for European Union was rolled out in Europe, said Edmon Chung of the registry operator, DotAsia Organisation.
If a particular domain name has more than one applicant, it will go to the highest bidder.
Businesses or companies with trademarks have first dibs on specific names.
The DotAsia Organisation, headquartered in Hong Kong, will receive all applications through authorised registrars.
Applications to a separate Pioneer Domains programme are also open until August 31 for organisations seeking generic domains such as music.asia or money.asia.
