United Nations : UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged the Security Council to authorise the deployment of some 26,000 troops to Sudan’s Darfur region this week.
“I would expect … the Security Council should take action authorising the joint hybrid operation as soon as possible,” Ban told a news conference at the UN Headquarters Monday.
“I sincerely hope that the Security Council will take the necessary action within this week.”
Britain, France and Ghana last week circulated a draft Security Council resolution that would authorise the deployment of the joint African Union (AU)-UN peacekeeping force to Darfur.
The draft said the proposed force, known as the United Nations-African Union mission in Darfur (UNAMID), would consist of up to 19,555 military personnel and a civilian component of up to 3,772 police personnel.
