National convention to draw Myanmar constitution resumes

Yangon : Myanmar's National Convention to work out detailed basic principles for drawing up a new state constitution resumed its meetings here Wednesday, signifying the near-end of the first step of the government announced seven-step roadmap to democracy.

The final session, taking place at the Nyaunghnapin Camp in Hmawby, Yangon division, about 40 km northwest of Yangon, is to adopt the detailed basic principles for all the seven remaining chapters, which had been discussed and suggested by delegate groups during the last session.

The seven remaining chapters are 'election', 'political parties', 'state of emergency', 'amendments of constitution', 'state flag, state emblem, national anthem and capital', 'transitory provisions' and 'general provisions'.

At the opening of the final session, being held after a recess of more than six months, First Secretary of the State Peace and Development Council and Chairman of the National Convention Convening Commission (NCCC) Lieutenant-General Thein Sein delivered a speech.
