"Any further talks between the Serbian government and representatives of the Albanian majority in the province would not need a new resolution to take place," Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica told reporters after meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel Tuesday.

He added that independence for Kosovo would be dangerous not only for Serbia but also for the region. The resolution is "unacceptable", since Serbia would lose 15 percent of its territory once Kosovo was independent.

However, Merkel stressed that both Germany and the European Union (EU) intend to support the new Kosovo draft resolution in the UN Security Council aimed at giving Kosovo supervised independence under the EU.

Kostunica stuck to his position on the Kosovo issue during his visit to Portugal on July 16, saying that Kosovo was an integrated and inseparable part of Serbia. The country would not compromise over the issue despite its efforts to join the EU, he added.
