Highly-decorated officer Kiran Bedi, an IPS officer of 1972 batch, is also a front-runner for the top job.

Bedi had served in the rank of joint commissioner in Delhi Police before being promoted as director general (home guards). She was recently appointed director general of the Bureau of Police Research and Development.

However, home ministry sources said that no decision was taken yet for the important post, which falls vacant as incumbent K.K. Paul is moving to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

"Even though Dadwal is the front-runner for the post, no formal decision on this has been taken," the home ministry spokesman told IANS.
