Police said the troops acting on a tip-off surrounded an area in Wuyan, 20 km from here in Pulwama district, in the morning where the two militants were hiding.

"After a fierce encounter both the terrorists were killed. They have been identified as Syed Dawood Shah alias Tahir Shah belonging to Sarhad, Pakistan, who was the chief coordinator of Al-Badr in the Valley. The second terrorist was identified as a local, Abdul Rashid Bhat," a defence spokesman here said.

"Killing of Syed Dawood is a major blow to the terrorist group and would force them on the back foot. Two AK rifles, seven magazines, 119 rounds and two radio sets with one antenna were recovered from them," the spokesman said.
