Islamabad : A Pakistani man from the city of Karachi sold his 13-year-old daughter to settle gambling debts and was planning the same fate for her twin sister, local media reported on Tuesday.

The former garment factory worker handed over the child for 50,000 rupees ($820) for marriage to a man from the same city after failing to repay the debts despite selling the family's possessions, his wife told the Dawn newspaper.

He was also planning the sale of her other daughter, she claimed.

The gambler had previously sold his wife's house and would allegedly beat her up whenever she demanded money for food and upkeep of their other home.

Despite being against the law, the sale of girls for purposes of marriage is not infrequent in Pakistan, especially in rural areas where authorities seldom prosecute.
