Washington : The US has said it is closely watching Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's decree to tighten the regulation of media.
"That would be a step we would watch very closely," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Tuesday.
"We would just encourage our friends in Pakistan to look at the role of a free media in their society as one that ultimately strengthens their society," McCormack said.
McCormack made the comments after Musharraf issued an emergency ordinance Monday to tighten regulations on electronic media, including private TV channels.
Pakistan has been a strong ally of the US in the war against terrorism.
