As the first few drops of rain fell after the welcome clap of thunder, a wave of relief swept over Delhites.

"Finally the rains!" cried out Sujit Chakraborty, an employee of a private firm. "When I stepped out of my house this morning, I was glad to see the cloudy sky and although quite humid I was happy the sun was not baking my back."

The rains came in the afternoon, and many simply poured out of their homes and offices across the city to enjoy the downpour.

Before the rains, the maximum temperature in the city was 34.5 degree Celsius. The minimum was 28 degree Celsius.

For the harried commuters who have been sweating it out every day, the rains gave way to rejoicing.

"I used to hate going to office because of the heat. The rains have changed it all. It has infused renewed energy in me," said Arnab Goswami, a professional in a private firm.

The mercury hit the 45-degree mark over the weekend, making it one of the worst spells of any summer.
