Ranchi : The brother of a youth killed by police as a bank robber has filed a petition in the Jharkhand High Court, seeking a high-level inquiry into the death.
Gorakhnath Ram is a sales tax employee posted in Dumka district, about 400 km from the state capital. His brother Dadan Kumar was killed along with two others by police on June 7 after a group of seven people looted Rs.15.3 million from a Syndicate Bank branch here.
In the petition he filed Friday, Ram said his brother was a student and was not involved in the bank robbery.
"My brother has nothing to do with any crime. I demand an inquiry by a high court judge to expose the lie spread by police," said Ram.
Ram has also moved the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). He has kept the body of his brother embalmed in their ancestral house in Ara district of Bihar, demanding a second autopsy under the supervision of a court or the NHRC.
"Police killed my brother from close range and called it an encounter," he said.
He has sought action against the Ranchi senior superintendent of police (SSP) and the officers involved in the encounter.
But a police official said: "Ram is making a hue and cry to save his skin. He knows everything about his brother. The fourth dacoit arrested after the loot has admitted that Dadan Kumar masterminded the operation."
On the evening of June 7, police had raided Ram's house and claimed that a shootout took place killing three people, including Dadan. Police said the deceased were bank robbers.
Police also claimed to have recovered the money stolen from the bank during the raid.
